Now the interrogate is..... The computer came with windows xp media center edition2005 but I can't find that boot disk I can only find another dell boot disk which is windows xp bailiwick edition SP1a. Will this cd work? Also if this all works will my original data on my computer still be there. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I dont penury to mess up the computer any more.

A: i have included a concatenate that will help you restore the hal.dll file that is needed.the hal.dll file should be the same.yes your original files will be there it will only replace the missing or depraved hal.dll file.here is another way to fix it.

If you get an error regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll file, it might simply be the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: travel that is misconfigured
1.Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2.At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3.Press the number that corresponds to the reprove location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.Typically this will be #1
4.Type bootcfg /liber veritatis to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
5.Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
6.Take out the CD ROM and type make one's departure
