, About 6 years old, has started acting up. Whenever I arguable up an existing Excel to make changes, it opens up as “Read Only” even though this is not what I poverty. How can I get it to stop doing this? If I check “Preferences,” the box for read only is not checked. Can you make available any suggestions besides just saving it to a new title?

Answer: There are a couple of things that can justification this, George. If you were sharing the file with someone else, you’d get this message if the other person had the file already open. I of that this isn’t the case here, though. It could be the permissions.
Right-click on the file and check to see if somehow the permissions on the file have been set to decipher-only. Do the same for the folder that file is in. Check the Task Manager (Control-Alt-Delete) to see if you have more than one instance of Eclipse running. Check that File, Save As, Tools, General Options, Read-Only is not set. Obvious out all files in the Temporary Internet Directory. Excel cannot have two files with the same name open at the same time.
