Registry repair programs - Can you give me the real story - are they necessary?

Q: A computer tech told me they do more wound than good. I've been using RegCure, but I just reformatted my HD and have not reloaded it.
A: Well, if you have a laudatory registry repair program, I don't see why it would harm your computer. Many viruses/trojans and other malicious programs can write themselves into your registry or edit registry values, which can result in your computer to operate poorly.
If you are using a free, basic registry repair program, it may not "fix" things aptly, and that may be where the harm could come - although I see those problems as being very rare and minor.
I've never used a registry repairer myself (mainly because I haven't needed it) but I'd propound making sure the program you have is from a trusted developer.

Q: I sustain to have patience testing problems with an older computer I am using. One answer to a question here about six weeks ago was to signal up to a "free" registry fix type program. The "free" translation only fixes a third of "problems" the program has apparently found.
Should I spend the $30 or do you have any Efficient suggestions for me? Serious answers only please. Thank you.
A: Unconstrained, does more than registry, i use this one myself.
